1. Who Started IPL
The history of the Indian Premier League is fascinating. The Indian Premier League was first proposed by Lalit Modi, vice president of the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI). It is designed in the style of European club football, notably the English Premier League. IPL was launched as a counterpunch to Zee Group's rebellious Indian Cricket League (ICL).
Following India's success at the 2007 T20 World Cup, the BCCI launched the Indian Premier League, a franchise-based Twenty20 cricket league, on September 13th, 2007. The IPL initiative was driven by BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi, who laid out the specifics of the competition, including its structure, prize money, franchise income scheme, and squad guidelines. A seven-member governing committee comprised of former India players and BCCI executives was also disclosed to oversee the IPL. The IPL was not formed as a "Pavlovian response" to the ICL, Modi further emphasized, adding that they had been working on the idea for two years.
2. IPL Tournament Format
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India. The league consists of eight teams representing different cities in India. Each team plays every other team twice in a round-robin format, with the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs. The playoffs consist of two qualifiers, an eliminator, and the final. The team that wins the final is crowned the IPL champion.
3. First Season of IPL
The first season of IPL was played in 2008. This Twenty20 cricket tournament is played between 8 and 14 teams, which are all owned by either companies or individuals. The first IPL match was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The match was played on 18 April 2008.
KKR won the toss and decided to field first. The opening bowlers for RCB were Andrew McDonald, who took 2 wickets for 40 runs in his 4 overs, and Joginder Sharma, who picked up 1 wicket for 33 runs during his 3 overs; while Rahul Dravid scored 62 runs off 44 balls before being dismissed by Captain Gautam Gambhir of KKR.
With this win, Kolkata Knight Riders became the first team ever to win any edition of the Indian Premier League by beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets with two balls remaining in their quota of 20 overs after being set an improbable target of 231 runs required off 20 overs to win the game which would normally have taken about three hours but thanks to some fine batting from both sides it ended up lasting only 38 minutes.
